Players

• Audio Overload - Mac/Windows/Linux audio player that covers a very large quantity of different console/computer emulated music formats, one of those which is SSF. Developed/maintained by Richard Bannister and R. Belmont.

• Audio Overload SDK - Source code/SDK for some of Audio Overload's file format engines, one of those being SSF, maintained by R. Belmont.

• AOSSF plugin pack - A set of plugins for Winamp, foobar2000, and KbMedia Player developed by an anonymous 2ch member based on the Audio Overload SDK.

SSF-related Python scripts
Here are a few scripts that may be of some use for dumping/ripping SSF files. Documentation/usage information is embedded in comments in the scripts themselves if available. If I get enough requests for it, I'll try to provide better documentation/tutorials (probably in HTML) on using these.

Scripts for SDDRVS sound driver

• ssfdump (v0.07) - SSF dumping script for use with SSF (the emulator), Yabause, or anything else that can dump sound memory from Saturn/ST-V games.

• ssfmake (v0.14) - SSF combiner script to make an SSF (and now ssflibs/minissfs) file out of data ripped from the game CD(s). All the major work done in the script is defined as a function so the user is free to customize its use (looping over a bunch of files for example). I probably need to document this script better some day, though.

• ssftime (v0.07) - SSF/miniSSF auto-timer (command-line interface). The script basically runs through the track data specified by a SSF(s)/miniSSF(s), accumulates the step times, applies tempo events, and tags the "length" and "fade" fields appropriately. Looped tracks are timed to 2 loops with 10 seconds of fade by default, but other values can be specified as well.

• ssfinfo (v0.09) - SSF/miniSSF information generator (command-line interface). Prints out various information (area map, sequence and tone bank headers, etc.) relevant to the SSF file. Useful for troubleshooting problems with SSFs (SSF players also).

• tonext (v0.06) & seqext (v0.06) - Tone and sequence data extractors (command-line interface) primarily to be used with games that store this data in large, uncompressed archives. Success rate isn't perfect (you may get some false positives), but they seem to work pretty well. They make nice companion scripts to ssfmake.

DSF-related Python scripts
Here are a few scripts that may be of some use for ripping DSF files. Documentation/usage information is embedded in comments in the scripts themselves if available.

Scripts for Manatee sound driver

• dsfmake (v0.03) - A DSF ripping script set up in a similar fashion to ssfmake. The script produces DSFs (or DSFLIB+miniDSFs) from MLT files, which is a standard sound archive format used in many Sega Dreamcast games.

• mltmake (v0.01) - MLT creator (command-line interface). Creates MLT files from individual Manatee driver sound files. Companion script to dsfmake.

• mltext (v0.02) - MLT extractor (command-line interface) primarily to be used with games that store this data in large, uncompressed archives. Companion script to dsfmake.

• dsfsndext (v0.01) - Manatee sound file extractor (command-line interface). Dumps all individual sound files related to the Manatee sound driver from an uncompressed archive which can later be assembled into a MLT file with mltmake. Companion script to dsfmake.

• dsftime (v0.01) - DSF/miniDSF auto-timer (command-line interface). Basically the same as ssftime, but instead works on DSF/miniDSFs. The dsftrackprint.py file provided in the archive is for debugging purposes and isn't used in normal execution.

Scripts for AM2 DTPK sound driver

• dsfdtpk (v0.01) - Command-line DSF ripping tool for AM2 DTPK sound files. The tool is set up by default to rip only music data and ignore sound effects. If you do want sound effects, there's an option to enable them.

• am2drvext (v0.00) - Command-line AM2 sound driver extractor. To do the extraction, the tool assumes that the driver version string begins with "AM2/AICA" and starts at offset 0x20. Slightly dubious but should work most of time.

• dtpkext (v0.00) - Command-line DTPK sound file extractor.

Note to SSF rippers (on DSP effects)
Please don't neglect to include DSP programs if the game uses them. Just because you are not hearing any effects in the player (there's a bug in the Highly Theoretical demo (in_ssf.dll) that is preventing many SSFs from reaching the DSP program load routine) does not mean any DSP programs should be excluded. If you can't find any DSP programs among the game files on the CD, you can try getting them from a dump of sound memory (via ssfdump.py or other means). Read the comments in ssfmake.py for details on extracting DSP programs.

Along with the DSP program, a sufficient amount of RAM needs to be allocated so it can be used as a ring buffer for delay processing. DSP programs typically need either 0x4040, 0x8040, 0x10040, or 0x20040 bytes of RAM (you can use ssfinfo.py to find exactly how much RAM the DSP program needs). Also, the starting offset for DSP RAM must be a multiple of 0x2000. If it isn't, the driver will refuse to load the DSP program. DSP RAM size and starting offset is handled in the area map, so if you are using a custom one or one of the general maps provided with ssfmake.py, please keep this in mind. See the comments in ssfmake.py for more details on the general area maps and DSP RAM.

Yet another thing that needs to be considered when using the DSP is selecting the correct mixer. Basically, you want to make sure that the effect send levels in the selected mixer are not all zero. ssfinfo.py will give the necessary information on the selected mixer (just make sure the EFSDL values in the selected mixer are not all zero).


Problematic Driver versions
Here is a list of problematic driver versions that aren't playing back properly with the current ripping methods (likely a problem in how the driver is being initialized). I haven't been able to determine why these problems are occuring, and at this stage I would suggest using a different, working version of the sound driver when ripping. If you do use a different driver version, please document it when releasing the sets (in the ssf comment tag or in documentation distributed with the set). To check the driver version used in a SSF, use ssfinfo.py.

Known problematic versions:

• SDDRVS6.TSK ver1.28 - playback is completely silent (appears to be a hacked version of SDDRVS.TSK, used in Tokimeki Memorial)

• Ver2.00 - playback at very low volume (ex. Kakyuusei)

• Ver2.04 - playback at very low volume (ex. Soukyugurentai, EVE Burst Error)

About the archive...
SSF rips are not usually very conducive to ssflib/minissf optimization. To save bandwidth in cases where minissf/ssflib is not used, files are stored uncompressed in a 7z solid archive. These sets include a bin2ssf script which will convert the uncompressed .bin files to .ssf files. All sets include English and Japanese tagging scripts as well (running one of these will be necessary for tagging for the uncompressed-stored sets). The scripts require both bin2psf and PSFPoint tools, which can be found at PSF Central.
